The Burr Trail is the most easily driven
road in the Grand Staircase - Escalante
National Monument.
It owes that distinction to the state of
Utah which paved it prior to creation of
the park. It starts from Rte 12 just south
of Boulder and can be driven by an RV
about 40 miles; then it enters Capitol
Reek NPk and requires a 4wd or rugged
high-clearance vehicle for further travel.
There is an easily accessible slot canyon
next to the road, roughly about 11 miles
from its start. It is wide and easily
explored, but its sheer walls meet the
definition of a slot canyon.
Scampering through it
was easy and fun.
Multi-colored streaks of
desert varnish.
We also entered two other slot canyons in the monument that are much more
challenging. One involved climbing up steep 10-foot high rock obstacles and the
other involved squeezing though passages so narrow one had to walk sidewaysand hold one's breath for a few feet.
Unfortunately, I could take no pictures there since carrying my camera was impractical.
They require a 4wd car and are located off the Hole-in-the-Rock road, at Dry Fork of
Coyote Gulch. Enquire locally if interested.
