Big Sur Coast, Sea Mammals

Top two pictures were taken at Point Lobos.
Left: Harbor seals.
Right: Sea Lions.  The Spanish called them "Lobos Marinos"
= "Sea Wolves". - The origin of the name "Point Lobos"
The beach shown below is covered with young Elephant Seals, which are the largest members of the seal family.
At right is a close-up of these contented sun-bathers.  Fully mature males have a larger "nose" reminiscent of an elephant's trunk.  They arrive later than the young adults and none were present at the time of our visit.  This beach is located just north of San Simeon.  Elephant seals may also be found just north of Santa Cruz.
