As indicated by its location [3] at the end of the green route on the map below, San Miguel de Allende is located in the central highlands of Mexico, about four-fifths of the way from Texas to Mexico City. We had first driven from Laredo, Texas [1] to Zacatecas, Mexico [2] for an Escapees rally. After the rally, we had spent some time in Guanajuato, the capital of the state were San Miguel is located.
San Miguel is a fairly small town (about 50,000 population) but is rich in history as one of the first cities to cast off Spanish rule in 1810. It is a "colonial" town, with attractive architecture. Its altitude is about 5400 feet, close to that of Denver, and it has pleasant temperatures virtually all year. Its Instituto Allende is a famous art school and there are also fine language schools utilized by visitors from all over. Many American retirees have established their homes there. There is a very good library with both Spanish and English publications plus an active cultural and social life; fine restaurants and shops abound. We found San Miguel and the entire state of Guanajuato a very enjoyable and interesting place and we look forward to going there again.
