Our "old" camera is for sale:
It was used for the pictures in this website, prior to 2006.
The Olympus C-2100 digital camera, shown here, was bought a few years ago, and we are now using a newer, more expensive Panasonic FZ30. We would be willing to sell the old one, with some accessories, for $100 or best offer. (plus shipping).
Our purchase of the Olympus was influenced by two main considerations.
(1) We wanted a digital to be able to transfer pictures easily from camera to computer for "instant gratification" and ease of cropping, resizing and other editing. We can also view the pictures on our TV screen.
(2) It has a ten-fold optical zoom. This is nice for pictures of birds and wildlife. It has more than twice as much telephoto effect than my old film Pentax SLR film camera which had an attached second zoom lens which went only to 210 mm. And the Olympus is lighter and smaller.
A film camera with similar telephoto range would look and feel like a small cannon, and require a tripod. The digital one can be used with a tripod but satisfactory results can be obtained with "hand-held technique." As an aid to minimize vibration and hand-shaking in such pictures, the camera has a built-in image stabilization mechanism.
Some comments on capacity: The camera is rated at 2.1 megapixels; that is 1600 x 1200. Cameras are now available with much more than that rating but (as of then) they did not have as much zoom. This size seems quite adequate for our purposes, since we do not make large prints. We view our pictures filling our computer display. One does not need nor want pictures in a website to be very large (since most people prefer rapid download time). We will show you some examples, in a moment. We include a SmartMedia memory chip that can store 128 pictures (at the JPG compression we use).
Although cameras are now available with similar or more zoom, and higher megapixels, they cost a lot more than what we are willing to sell this one for.
