The town of Banff is overrun by tourists and shoppers
from all over the world, but is still a fun place to spend
part of one's stay in the Rockies.  We happened to be
there on July 1, Canada Day, commemorating the
country's establishment as a self-governing dominion.

There was a parade with many floats, marching bands,
horses and -- of course a unit of the RCMP, the famous
Mounties.  Canada's original inhabitants were also
represented, with a teepee, several dignitaries in
costume and dancing to drumbeats.

The tourist can see the powerful Bow Falls, right in the
town itself, by an easy walk from their hotel.   The little
Banff townsite is surrounded by large Banff National
Park with its many spectacular natural areas and
regions of true wilderness.
