This map shows the location of Newfoundland, an island to the North-East of the US, and the routes we followed to get there and return from Maine,  via the rest of Canada's Atlantic Provinces.  Map 2 will show Newfoundland in more detail.   Some notes as to the routes and the numbers shown here can be viewed below this map.

Our two months in Newfoundland was the main focus of our trip this summer, but of the 3500 miles we drove in Canada, almost 1500 miles were in the other Atlantic Provinces.   Scale in miles is shown at the upper right of the map.

We entered from Maine (#1 on our map) on July 1 and drove rather directly to Nova Scotia, where we enjoyed the Cabot Trail (#5 - #6) in Cape Breton Island.  We took a boat trip to Bird Island (between #6 and #8), to see "hundreds of Puffins."

We took the four-hour ferry from Sydney (#7) to Newfoundland.

At the end of our travels in Newfoundland, we took a 14-hour ferry back to Sydney from Argenta (shown in Map 2).

We went to Five Islands (#10) and Truro (#11) in Nova Scotia to see the famous tides.  Later, we went to The Rocks Provincial Park (#15) and Fundy National Park (#16) where we got even better views of the immense tidal change in the Bay of Fundy.

We spent a few days in Prince Edward Island, where the highlight was a Celtic Festival of music and dancing at Charlottetown (#14).

Incidentally, you may wonder why I speak of Canada's Atlantic provinces and not the term "Maritimes." It seems, for reasons I do not understand, that the latter term excludes Newfoundland, while the former term includes all the Maritimes plus Newfoundland.  Also, for the purists among you, I should acknowledge that the name of the province is now "Newfoundland and Labrador" -- so as to give equal billing for the larger but much less populated region on the mainland to the North-West of the island.  But the name of the island (if not the province) is still Newfoundland and that is how we will refer to it.
