Anne and Dave visited the Gannet colony at Cape St Marys in Newfoundland.  Eleven thousand of the birds breed there, mostly on a tiny island offshore.  We were able to walk to within 70 feet of it, and were thrilled by what we saw.   They seemed indifferent to our presence, tending their young and flying to gather food from the sea.   A few weeks after our visit, they would all begin to leave  the colony and resume their life at sea.  Youngsters stretch and flutter their wings but do not fly until they actually leave the nest.  In following pages you may see closeups of families.
